Opened by General Cinema on March 28, 1980 as a four screen. It was sold to Excellence Theatres in the late-1980’s. In early-1990 it was sold to Carmike, who expanded it to a twelve screen seating 2,400 on May 18, 1990.

Despite what someone said above, almost nothing has changed at the theater since being converted to stadium seating in 2002, and besides stadium seating, almost nothing has changed since I started going to this theater in the late 90s. The seats are the same ones that were in the theaters before the stadium seating conversion. I assume improvements will finally be made in the next few months as a result of AMC buying Carmike.

Now the AMC Classic Southern Hills 12. AMC has made few changes so far. AMC has said the “classic” theatres will operate on a tighter budget, so I know it won’t be as nice as traditional AMC locations. I hope they do make some much needed renovations soon, even if it will be nowhere near as nice as AMC’s flagship theatres. This theatre really needs it.

Rayman29 unfortunately AMC put a hold on all renovations to the Carmike chain theaters they purchased until 2018 or early 2019. The merger caused them to get into a desperate financial situation. Carmike sucked as a chain like this theater my local theater here was opened in 1996 and Carmike did nothing to keep it up or renovate it.

This was taken over by Excellence theatres in 1988 giving Excellence the first-run monopoly in Siouxland until 2004.

Nikki Paul, who for decades worked at the box office of several movie theaters in Sioux City, most recently this one, has died at the age of 100. While she stopped working at the box office several years ago, she continued as a Walmart greeter until last year.
