Southern Hills Cinema 12

Opened by General Cinema in the mid-1980’s as a four screen. It was sold to Excellence Theatres in the late-1880’s. In the early-1990’s it was sold to Carmike, which later expanded it to a twelve screen seating 2,400.

I believe the Southern Hills Cinema opened up on September,1980 as a four screen theatre. (The Southern hills mall opened up in 1980).

Went to this theatre for several years until the Promenade opened up downtown. I have only seen a couple movies here since then, the last one was in November 2010. The theatre was in terrible shape. Carmike needs to relies they aren’t the only theatre in SC anymore and update it.

It is fairly nice today. However, I prefer Promenade! Last show I saw there was The Hobbit in 3D. It was awesome

Despite what someone said above, almost nothing has changed at the theater since being converted to stadium seating in 2002, and besides stadium seating, almost nothing has changed since I started going to this theater in the late 90s. The seats are the same ones that were in the theaters before the stadium seating conversion. I assume improvements will finally be made in the next few months as a result of AMC buying Carmike.

As of today now known as the AMC Classic Southern Hills 12. While I know they did not do a complete remodel,AMC did make improvements, although I haven’t seen a movie recently enough to see any. AMC has said the “classic” theatres will operate on a tighter budget, so I know it won’t be as nice as traditional AMC locations. Still any improvements to this theatre are welcome and a long time coming.
