Did this one have an elaborate vertical sign that included the face of an Indian? I seem to recall a theatre of that name with such a sign.

Maybe it had an earlier name. Doing research on a theater after it is added is a great idea, but normally the research is done before you submit a theater.

Boxoffice is prone to errors of this type-their reporters are not always thorough. Mike Rivest has a timeline of 1955 to 1980, but sometimes he rounds those dates off.He also mentions Williams as the owner. Perhaps the Chief was a later aka for one of the three you mentioned.

I couldn’t find anywhere that the Williams chain operated this theatre, they did have the McCurtain, Arrow and the Tower, but no mention of the Chief. Those are the three theatres listed for the Williams Chain in Broken Bow.

We know almost as much now as we knew before.

K. Lee Williams owned three theaters in Broken Bow, including the Chief, in the late 1930s and onward, according to articles in Boxoffice magazine at that time. It appears that the theater operated until the early 1980s and might have been on Main Street, although I haven’t been able to confirm either of those. I have not seen any seat count to date.

If you know absolutely nothing about a particular theatre, what is the point of listing it?

Did this theatre have an AKA?
