This theater is going to be demolished. This is a May 15, 2007 article about plans to raze the entire shopping center.

From Boxoffice Magazine, November, 1987: “Cineplex Odeon… plans to open a theatre with up to six screens in Waverly Place, a shopping center under construction in south Cary…. Cineplex has signed a lease with Waverly Place’s developer, H.S. Lichtin Developer Co. in Raleigh.”

Once owned and operated by Cineplex Odeon Corporation in the mid-1980’s before it was acquired by Carmike Cinemas in the 1990’s.
The Waverly Place Cinemas 6 closed its doors in 2000.

Was purchased by Carmike prior to 1993. After closing, the building was turned into a Gold’s Gym.

I worked at this theater from November 1989 until May 1992. Carmike acquired it while I was employed there… I think it was in ‘91.

I managed this theater for Carmike from January 1994 to December 1996. We used to call it the “Purple Palace of Love” due to the excessive use of purple in the decor – seats, counters, carpet, etc. The place used to be packed, but the auditoriums were abnormally small, with the largest seating less than 250, and the sound quality was abyssmal, with 3 of the 6 auditoriums featuring only mono sound.
