Ivoryton is a small village in the town of Essex. The Ivoryton Playhouse was built in 1908 as a recreation hall for the employees of the Comstock-Cheney ivory factory. The town was known for producing at one time, 90% of ivory in the country for its production of pianos.

According to the Ivoryton historical marker down the street, "In 1908, Comstock-Cheney built a recreation hall where employees put on shows, enjoyed traveling vaudeville troupes and silent movies."

The Ivoryton Playhouse is one of the oldest self-supporting summer theaters in the nation. In the last 28 years, the Playhouse completed a total rehab, including new shingles, new heating and air-conditioning and new seats and state-of-the-art theatrical sound and lighting systems.
