Stella Cinema

Located in the affluent south Dublin district of Mount Merrion. Designed by the architect R.H Dowling, the Stella Cinema was built for the O'Grady family (who also owned the Stella Cinema in Rathmines). It opened on 28th July 1955, showing the circus drama "Ring of Fire". The cinema closed on 29th October 1976 and became Flanagan Kerins furniture shop. Many of the original features remained intact, such as the ticket office. The furniture store closed on 4th September 2018 following the sale of the building, which was demolished in February 2019 for 48 high-end apartments to be built on the site.

While many of the original attributes of the cinema do indeed survive, adaptation for shop use included inserting new intermediate floors and side doors. At least one of the original cinema toilet facilities has also survived, in what seems like original condition.
