The $4 million Reel Theatre, designed by Boise architect Trey Hoff, opened in time for Thanksgiving of 1999. The 1500 seat stadium theater, which took about six months to construct, has seating capacities ranging from 100 to 300 seats. At the time of the opening Reel was operating the old Centre 1&2 in Ontario but it was later closed.
Reel Theatres, founded in 1985, is a chain with 6 locations in Utah, Idaho, and Oregon, specializing mainly in sub-run releases but since they control the market in the Ontario region they can offer first-run pictures in the city. Reel’s closest competition is Edwards Theatres in Nampa Idaho, 40 miles away, where Reel also runs a discount operation.
