Sterling had three theatres in downtown in the early sound era in the Sterling, the Lincoln and the Illini. Apparently, the acoustics of all three were fairly poor so the Sterling announced it was close to rectify the issue. During that remodeling, the Illini and Lincoln fused to improve their acoustics under one roof - the Lincoln Theatre. Here’s an ad for the relaunced Sterling Theatre on October 9, 1930.
