The Fox Theatre was opened by National General Theatres on October 26, 1967. The opening movie was “To Sir, With Love” starring Sidney Poitier. It was twinned on December 20, 1972. I barely remember what the place looked like since I was so young but I remember seeing “The Black Hole”, “Chariots of Fire”, and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” there. The concession stand was smack in the middle of the lobby and the theatres were on either side. The Fox Theatre was clsed November 7, 1985 and is now a Mercede-Benz dealership.

Does any part of the theatre still stand at the site of the Mercedes dealership?

To Scott, yes, they kept part of the building. Not sure how much because of the added features. See this link.

Does anyone recall if this theater was equipped with 70MM?

If we had 70mm it was boxed up and never used in the years I managed the theater

Thanks for the comment! I have fond memories of that theater. I can remember seeing KRAKATOA EAST OF JAVA, YOURS, MINE AND OURS, BARRY LYNDON, and SUPERAN. The large curved screen would have been fantastic for 70mm.

I remember seeing a few films here, including a re-release of The Sound of Music. It was a pretty nice theater as I recall, and in later years I saw The Right Stuff and Krull here. There must have been a water leak in those later years, because I recall smelling mildew… not particularly pleasant.
