A 1982 aerial shows that the theater was still operational, but a 1993 aerial shows that the screen was removed. So it has to be closed in the 1980s.

The item I cited above also said that the new Martin drive-in at Phenix City Alabama would open that week, but our photo page for the Phenix Drive-In has a grand opening ad dated March 24. I suspect that Boxoffice was tardy in publishing the announcement, so it’s likely that the Sunset was also already open by the time the issue came out.

The April 1, 1950 issue of Boxoffice said that Martin’s new drive-in at Americus would open that week.

Open 1955-1975?

I know it was open in 1967.

Need an address, more info and photos.

I wonder if President Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter ever went to this drive-in. They were born and raised and will be buried in front of his home in the tiny hamlet of Plains, Georgia about 10 miles west of the this larger town of Americus.

Off topic, but- forgive this U.S. Navy Chief, Lieutenant Carter “loved the Navy” (I know the feeling), was in the fledging nuclear submarine program, is the only U.S. President to qualify in submarines, and has a submarine named after him, the USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23).
