Roxy Drive-In

The 600 car capacity Roxy Drive-In opened August 4, 1961 with a double feature of Glen Ford in “Cimarron” and Robert Michum in “The Last Time I Saw Archie”. The theatre continued with first run programing throughout the 1960’s and early-1970’s, mixed with an occasional dusk-to-dawn horror marathon. By the late-1970’s, the drive-in was given over to to triple-x rated films, this continued until its eventual closing in the fall of 1986. The property was still identifiable as a former drive-in as late as 2009, at which time the screen and ticket booth were demolished.

I miss this old drive-in. Even with the screen & ticket booth gone, it’s still recognizable as a former drive-in. I remember one night it was pouring rain, & my car battery went dead. The projectionist was kind enough to let me use the phone in the projectionist’s booth to call my Dad for help, & he told them at the ticket booth what car my Dad was driving, & they let him in with no problem. The movie that was playing that night was Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid.
