Located on Great George Street at the corner with Drake Street, in Rochdale, Lancashire. The Palace Theatre was opened on 4th December 1911. It was equipped for pictures and variety shows. By 1922, it had been re-named Palace Picture House, and was taken over by the Northern Cinemas chain.
Around 1930, when talkies were introduced, it had a re-vamp and a name change to Palace Tudor Super Cinema. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system.
In October 1957, it was taken over by the Essoldo chain, and they operated it until it was closed on 31st August 1968. Independent operators then took over and screened Asian films from ‘Bollywood’, named the Euro/Asian Film Club. The Palace Tudor Super Cinema finally closed in in November 1981.
Converted into a night club named ‘Scene One’, it was destroyed by fire in April 1987. It was rebuilt as the Xanadu nightclub, which was closed in 2002, and the building was demolished later that year.
