Fairfield Cinemas at Bullard Square

This National Amusements cinema is at the side and rear of the BJ’s warehouse. The Showcase Cinemas is just 200 ft away from their entrance, across the river in Bridgeport. It was opened on November 19, 1993. It closed on March 16, 2020 with all other theatres country-wide due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was announced on August 6, 2020 that the closure would be permanent.

The geography lesson was interesting but the overviuew provided no details about the Fairfield Cinemas at Bullard Square. What was the opening date — how many seats — who was the architect — what style — size of the auditoriums — other amenities — one or two floors. Things like that. Nothing!

These theaters opened around the same time as the Showcase Cinemas next door. 93ish. I remember seeing Gettysburg and Schindler’s List here. They are inside the former Bullard building that also houses BJ’s Wholesale Club. There are a handful of outdoor parking spaces but most are beneath the building. You need to take a couple of escalator rides up to the lobby, which has a huge neon drive in sign. It’s been a while since I’ve been there, but I remember a few of the auditoriums were quite small. This theater showed more offbeat fare than its sister theater next door.

The Fairfield Cinemas at Bullard Square closed on March 16, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic just prior to the late shows. On August 6, Showcase Cinemas Circuit made the closure permanent stating, “It has been a great pleasure to serve the Fairfield community for the last 26 years. Due to business circumstances, we will not reopen Fairfield Cinemas at Bullard Square. Any Showcase Starpass rewards currently available will be forfeited and no substitutions will be awarded. Since we don’t have any nearby theaters for you to visit, we will deactivate your account.” It was one of many theaters which closed during the pandemic which did not reopen.

I’m curious if anybody knows if National Amusements built this theatre or whether they took it over from a competitor while it was being built. Always seemed so strange that they would build so close to their own theater and that they never really branded the outside with anything resembling their other theatres.
