Teatro Garibaldi

The Teatro Garibaldi is located within the Mozzagrugno Palace, headquarters of the Municipal House on Corso Garibaldi.

It was built in 1837, designed by architect Oberty. Originally named after Maria Teresa Isabella of Bourbon it opened as the Real Teatro Maria Teresa Isabella, and was dedicated to Guiseppe Garibaldi.

The auditorium was semi-circular in shape, with an audience of 100 seats on the main floor, two tiers of boxes, one tier with 10 seats per box, the other tier with 11 seats per box, and there was a gallery with two rows of benches.

The interior of the theatre was sumptuously decorated by artists from the capitol of the Kingdom and was considered by all to be a jewel of architecture and decoration.

The inauguration took place on 7th June 1838 with a dual presentation of “Lucia di Lammermoor” by Donizetti followed by “La Sonnambula” by Bellini.

In 1903, it was planned to expand the theatre, a project of Angelo Messini who was occupying the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari. The Teatro Garibaldo became the miniature twin of the Teatro Petruzzelli. It re-opened in 1908 and the theatre had a period of great artistic success, which was followed by total neglect during World War I. After then it was used sporadically, and was closed permanently in late-1940.

In 1977 approval was given for the restoration of the theatre, which was completed in early-2005. The beautifully restored theatre was re-opened in March 2005, and the first season of productions were staged in January-April 2006.
