Originally on this site stood the Alhambra/Imperial Cinema, which was destroyed by bombing in 1944. The new 1,600-seat Gaumont opened on 18th December 1952. Seating was provided in orchestra and balcony levels, and was fully equipped to stage variety shows, as well as films.
In June 1973, the stage was converted into four screens, and the main auditorium was twinned, by separating the balcony. In later years, a seventh screen was created out of another space in the building.
Today, the original orchestra screen has 600 seats, the former balcony screen has 275 seats, and other auditoriums seat between 225 down to 75 seats.
