Victory Cinema

Located in the north Manchester district of Blackley, it is often said to be in neighbouring Moston. An advertisement in Kine Weekly dated 6th January 1921 for cinema furnishers J.S. Taylor, says that the “Victory Cinema, Moston” opened on 8th November 1920, with 1,450-seats. Further research has found that today’s Capson Street was originally named Charles Road, the address given in the 1928 edition of Kine Yearbook. That entry has the cinema owned by Victory Cinemas (Manchester) Ltd. and booked by W.D. Moorhouse. The manager was M. Killoram and there were two changes of programme a week. Around 1930 it was equipped with a British Talking Pictures(BTP) sound system. It was operated by the H.D. Moorhouse Circuit, and the seating capacity had been reduced to 900 by 1937.

On the night of 22nd December 1940 German incendiary bombs landed on the cinema roof and set fire to the building, leaving only the four walls standing. The only casualty was the cinema cat, which was never seen again. The Victory Cinema was never re-opened, and the remains were finally demolished in 1966.
