The Town Hall is one of Midland’s best known buildings. It is an outstanding example of the Federation Free Classical architectural style and is indicative of the type of buildings that can be found listed in the City’s Municipal Inventory.
Official Opening
Midland Town Hall was officially opened on January 23, 1907. However, it wasn’t until after World War I that the clock was placed on top of the dome. The clock serves as a memorial to the men who lost their lives during the War.
Earthquake
In the 1950s, the Town Hall continued to serve as the Council Chambers and Administration Centre for the Midland Junction Municipal Council (known from 1961 as the Midland Town Council) until 1970. By the 1960s, the building had become quite dilapidated and, after the 1968 Meckering earthquake, came under threat of demolition – The Midland Town Hall was nominated for the WA Register of Historic Places, and underwent extensive restoration work, but films are no longer screened there - Contributed by Greg Lynch –
