Tom Snooks & Son – Builder & original Exhibitor of The Civic Theatre Inglewood, WA – Opened Sat March 28, 1936. Tom Snooks was actively involved with the Civic Theatre site from the early 1920s, until his death in 1958. Tom chose the name Civic because, like the clock tower that looked both ways along this arterial road, it looks the same from both directions. Raycophone Sound Equipment was installed. Being a thrifty man, the earlier name Piccadilly was reused for the new flats. T. Snooks & Son were responsible for building many houses and small businesses in the Maylands-Inglewood area and beyond. Until Tom retired in 1945, due to ill health, all the boys, together with their sister Min (in accounts), worked in his firm; thereafter they established their own building business called Snooks Bros, which continued operating until the mid-1960s. Tom Snooks, therefore, played a significant role in both building and entertaining this microcosm of interwar suburbia. – ‘Air Hawks" (1935) from Columbia Pictures was the opening feature film starring Ralph Bellamy. Although limited in budget and production values, the introduction of a “death ray” elevated the modest programmer into the science-fiction genre. – Contributed by Greg Lynch –
