AD FOR

The Jerry Lewis Cinema was opened on January 26, 1972 and was one of three Jerry Lewis Cinema’s to operate in Canada (the other two were in Cambridge, Ontario and Peace River, Alberta). The Dixie-5 Theatre Theatre opened on October 10, 1972. I have an advertisement from the Toronto Star for “The Coal Miner’s Daughter” dated Friday May 9, 1980 for this movie theatre. It was closed in 1984.

I used to work at the Dixie 5 theatre (1982-1983)when I was a student. I remember watching the Big Chill over and over when it first came out…still my favourite movie of all time! In those days, the films were delivered in canisters each week and there was a projectionist who played the movies from his booth. Sadly the theatre closed, became the Dixie 5 pharmacy and then a baby store, not sure what it is now. Wish someone would post a photo of the theatre. Many happy memories from my teenage years working there!

Given the size of the renovated building, I can’t see this being a five-screen cinema. Can anyone confirm the number of screens?

My mother saw The Smurfs and the Magic Flute at this theatre in 1983.

This opened as Canada’s first and only Jerry Lewis Cinema on January 26th, 1972, and closed later in the year. It reopened on October 10th, 1972 as the Dixie 5 cinema and closed in 1984. It was booked by Premier theatres. Grand opening ad posted.
