Malco Theatre Circuit had all three theatres operating in Camden as the 1940’s were closing, but an independent opened the Camden Drive-In. Malco decided to compete launching the Mesa Drive-In on April 29, 1953. Mayor Walter Laney and Malco founders Richard and M.A. Lightman of Memphis made presentations. KAMD broadcast the event along with live music. The first film was “With a Song in My Heart”.

In 1955, Malco bought out the competing Camden Drive-In and both theatres ran the same films until season’s end. The Camden Drive-In was closed down. The Mesa Drive-In lasted until the end of the 1960 season and was closed and eventually demolished. Malco would open the Razorback Drive-In in 1969 returning an o-zoner in the area.
