Hoyts Regal Hartwell

Located in the east Melbourne district of Hartwell at the corner of Camberwell Road and Toorak Road. The Hoyts Regal Hartwell was opened on 8th May 1937 with Loretta Young in “Ramona” & Cecily Courtneidge in “Everybody Dance”. There was a ‘special matinee’ on that afternoon screening Shirley Temple in “Poor Little Rich Girl” & 6 Mickey Mouse cartoons. It was designed in a Streamline Modern style by architectural firm H. Vivian Taylor, Soilleux & Overend. Seating was provided for 741 in the stalls, 435 in the circle and 15 in the crying room. The cinema boasted a car park at the side of the theatre, a bicycle park, a spacious roof garden and air conditioning.

The Hoyts Regal Hartwell was closed in April 1959 with Tony Curtis in “The Defiant Ones” & Tommy Sands in “Sing Boy Sing”. Sadly, it was demolished for a service station which has been demolished and a modern office block has been built on the site.

Really delighted to see photos of my beloved local cinema in the 1950s. It epitomised elegance and excitement to a kid like me! Was so sad to see it destroyed by the arrival of TV from 1956. Any photo of its graceful exterior? It was made even more so by the triangular site it occupied.

Closed in april 1959 with “Defient ones” and “Sing boy sing”. Demolished in 1961 for a service station(name unknown?), then a fast food oulet(name unknown?)and in(2010’s?) an office block(and apartments?).
