Roxy Drive-In opened on 15th November 1940 with Claire Trevor in “The Dark Command” & Gordon Harker in “Inspector Hornleigh on Holiday”. Initially it had a capacity for 300-cars. It was operated by Haymarket’s Tivoli Theatres. Still open in 1969 with a capacity for 450-cars. The site is now Townsville Sports Reserve.

Opened on 1/1/1941 and closed in(1940’s?). Located in the North Ward Sports Ground. Now used as a sports ground.

Possibly built because of the large contingent of American troops in Townsville involved in World War 2. Possibly Australia’s first true drive-in theatre?
