Located in the Te Ato district of the city centre. A conversion of a former garage, the State Theatre was opened on 16th December 1933 with Jessie Matthews in “The Good Companions”. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. It was quite a plain building. All seating was on a single floor (there was no balcony). It was operated by the Amalgamated Theatres chain throughout its life and it the 1940’s they gave it an Art Deco style make-over.
Alterations were made in the early-1960’s and in July 1966 it was equipped with 70mm projection and was re-named Cinerama (although it never ran Cinerama films). It was closed on 15th September 1987 and has been demolished - Notes by Ken Roe
