An inglorious fate for what should have been a great cinema.

Simply put over screening in many medium size cities to larger ones.Pure greed.

I think it’s now something called “Rossi’s Buyer’s Depot”.

It seems that Pittsburgh is a dead market.

Hard to believe this theatre only lasted a little over a year.

Now that I think about it, wasn’t this place down the road from the drive-in? I’m beginning to think it wasn’t on the same site.

Does anyone have any recent photos of the interior and/or exterior they could post?

I can remember when this place first opened. My brother and I drove out here during the opening week. That was the only time I was ever at this theatre, although I’d been to the drive-in when I was a teenager. I honestly believe that the drive-in was a lot more fun.

It was a huge miscalculation to build this place. I wonder if the drive-in would still be in business today if it wasn’t bulldozed to build this hulk.

Does anybody have photos of this place or know of any photos? I’d like to see what it looked like when it was in business and as it is now.

Nothing of value remains – most everything was distroyed by previous tenants & vandals.

What architectural elements (screens, curtains, concession stands, etc.), if any, remain from the space’s movie theatre days, gmad?

As of April 2005, this theater complex has been re-opened as an inside market place with an outdoor “Flea Market” type operation in the rear. It is open every Saturday & Sunday rain or shine from 7:00 AM until 3:00 PM.

Any word on what has happened to this theatre recently, or to the land it sits on? Is it sitting vacant, or has it been demolished?

Architect needs to be updated to “David Rockwell/Rockwell Group.”

The exact dates of operation were 11/23/1999 through 6/28/2001.
The 87,000-square-foot facility was built on the site of the former Greater Pittsburgh Drive-In Theatre and was designed by architect David Rockwell.

The 20 North Versailles actually shut its doors in February, 2001, as part of the first wave of Loews Cineplex venues to be closed upon court approval of its then-bankruptcy reorganization plan. (Other Loews Cineplex sites cut loose at that time included the Worldwide Cinemas in Manhattan and the Nickelodeon in Boston.)

The address of the former Loews North Versailles 20 is: 200 Loews Drive, North Versailles PA 15137.

Loews announced this theatre, but had to wait for the municipality to make changes to the surrounding roads and other infrastructure adjustments before they could begin construction. As with most government projects, they moved at a snails pace. In the meantime the 24-screen plex down the street, which was announced after the Loews was announced, got built and opened long before the Loews and had captured the audience.

The Loews theatre had a total of 4172 seats. When it closed, all of the equipment was removed and most of it re-installed in the new Loews 34th Street in New York, which was just being completed at the time the North Versailles was closing.

Does anyone know a contact name or number regarding this theatre? or an exact address, if you click on “(map)” above it does not know where North Versailles is.
