Tivoli Cinema

Hayfield is a small town in the High Peak, Derbyshire, near the larger town of New Mills.

On 27th August 1921 Kozy Estates Ltd. floated shares at five shillings (25p) each to facilitate the construction of the Kozy Picture House, built of steel and stone, with pebble dash.

The owner was James Derbyshire. Mr. and Mrs. Sheersmith purchased the business on 30th September, and the grand opening took place on 21st December 1921 - with one and a half hours of films and one and a half hours of dancing, so the auditorium was evidently designed to be multi-function.

After 1923 the cinema was renamed the Tivoli Cinema. In the early-1930’s sound was installed but, at midnight on 29th May 1932, fire broke out. Astonishingly, due to a dispute between the Hayfield and New Mills fire services (and inadequate water pressure) the fire was able to get hold, and the cinema was completely destroyed. The only saving grace was that the films were saved! The cinema was never rebuilt.
