Like everything else, Yellow Page directories often contain mistakes. A current one for Queens, for example, lists the Colony Theatre in Jackson Heights, which was converted to retail ages ago.

It is the same building. But you might find a restaurant at 544 and if the correct address turns out to be 554, that could could be a retail store. As I’ve said a number of times, your assuming that the address above is correct when you use Google to determine what is located at that address today.

That may be true in some cases, but if you compare the Google photo from 6/30/08 with your photo from the same day, they both show the same building.

That much difference in numbers is another reason why you can’t use Google maps to tell what is located there today.

The Ace was listed at 554 Southern Boulevard in the 1960 Bronx yellow pages. Phone number was MOttHvn 9-4841.

Here is an undated photo from the Google site. As has been pointed out, the resolution is poor. I’ve been working on it but this is the best I can do for now.

This might have been larger than reported in the introduction. Film Daily Year Book listings for both the Congress and the Ace give a seating capacity of 1,800. And a news item in The New York Times of May 23, 1930 says that on the previous Saturday, nearly 2,000 underprivileged children attended a free performance and party at the Congress Theatre at Southern Boulevard and 149th Street in the Bronx.

Address was 544 Southern Blvd, not South Blvd…
