The Sky Vue Drive-In opened on July 8, 1954, as reported in the Edmonton Journal that day. At the time, its 20-acre, 1,100-car viewing field was believed to be the largest in Canada.
The opening program was Robert Newton in “Blackbeard the Pirate”, the Disney short “Water Birds”, plus cartoons.
Its newspaper advertisements placed it a mile east of the 75 Street city limits, (probably on 50 Street), a half mile south of Highway 16 (Refinery Road) on the west side of the street.
The highways have changed quite a bit since then; I used the address of Austin O'Brien High School for a rough guess to the old Sky Vue’s location.

“The Sky-Vue Drive-In Theatre opens on July 8, 1954 with "Blackbeard the Pirate”. Located at 9260 50th Street in Edmonton and is owned by a syndicate of City businessmen. Canada’s largest drive-in theatre spreads over 20 acres and can accommodate close to 1,100 cars. November 26, 1961 closes as independent. March 23, 1962, taken over by Odeon Theatres. October 31, 1974 last day as Odeon Theatre. March 14, 1975 ownership change to Landmark Theatres. Drive-In closes on November 30, 1975 with “Juggernaut”, “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three” and “Hang ‘em High”."
