Residenz Filmtheater

Located in the city center district of Innenstadt. The Residenz Theater was opened on 14th November 1913 and was operated by Karl Vogel. In 1916 Emil Schilling & Fritz Genandt took over. In 1925 it was modernised to the plans of architect Wilhelm Kreist. There were 1,150-seats in orchestra and balcony levels. It was equipped with an organ. In 1930 a sound system was added. In 1942 the cinema was partially destroyed by Allied bombs during World War II.

In 1949 the Residenz Filmtheater was re-opened with a reduced seating capacity of 1,022-seats. It was repaired to the plans of architect Ernst Huhn. The cinema was operated by Heinz Heising. In 1957 CinemaScope and a 4-channel stereophonic sound system was installed. The E VII B projectors were by Ernemann. The seats were by Bahre. In 1966 it was taken over by the Ufa chain. Four more screens were added in 1980 with seating capacities given as 681, 140, 105, 223 and 102.

The Residenz Filmtheater was closed on 18th August 1999. The cinema became a discotheque named Nachtresidenz.
