Tom Bourke and Edward Morris launched the Cozy Theatre next door to Bourke’s clothing store on June 12, 1914 in the Brandhorst Building with films and a five-piece orchestra initially called the Seward Orchestra but changed to the Cozy Orchestra soon thereafter. The theatre was bathed in a color palette of “pale green and white.” The Cozy Theatre closed on May 6, 1915 with Robert Warrick in “Dollar Mark”.

After being a cafĂ© for two years, it reopened as the Rex Theatre on August 4, 1917 with Alice Brady in “Bought and Paid For”. The Rex Theatre was challenged by the superior Rivoli Theatre that opened on May 3, 1920. The Rex Theatre’s pricing may have also been an issue with 80 cent admission being higher than the competitor’s tickets. The space was converted for other retail purposes.
