The Jewell Theatre was downtown Winside’s silent-era movie theatre. It launched August 22, 1913 with live entertainment. The theatre switched to a policy of full-time movies not long after and operated until end of lease on January 29, 1928 ending service with Patsy Ruth Miller in “South Sea Love” supported by a Pathé newsreel and short subjects.

Operator W. Henry Brune then moved to the existing retail building owned by Fred Wittler while a retailer took Brune’s Jewell Theatre. The new theatre carried the Jewell name temporarily beginning February 3, 1928 with “Coney Island” while a naming contest was held. 400 people entered and the unusual name “Brunada” was chosen. (It has its own Cinema Treasures page).
