Castle Theatre

The Pythian Castle, a four-story, multi-use building, was built in 1895-96 by a Wheeling chapter of the Knights of Pythias Lodge. A large room on the second floor, originally purposed as an assembly room, banquet room, and drill hall, began operating as the Castle Theatre, a vaudeville venue, in 1906.

By 1909 movies had become the main draw at the house, and the Castle Theatre was listed as one of eight movie theatres at Wheeling in the 1914-1915 American Motion Picture Directory. The Castle Theatre operated into the mid-1920’s, but was unable to compete with the growing number of modern, ground floor theatres, and had closed by 1926. In its later years, the space was occupied by a bingo parlor, but by the 1980’s it had fallen vacant. The building was demolished in 1991.
