Hippodrome Theatre

This large but basic theatre was constructed sometime after 1907. It was most likely constructed sometime after 1908, when the construction of the C&O Railroad’s new depot forced a drastic realignment of this section of S. Maple Avenue, which had previously run very close to the tracks.

The theatre was a wood frame structure with a two story section at the front holding the entrance and a few small shops. The auditorium itself was a one story section to the rear. It first appears on the September 1913 Sanborn. The theatre remained in operation through 1920, but sometime shortly thereafter it was demolished and replaced by a much more substantial theatre and business building. This may initially have kept the Hippodrome Theatre name, but it soon became the Collins Theatre.
