Opened in July 1975 by Chakeres Theatres, the Southtown Cinemas I & II were inside the old Elder Beerman’s Department Store next to the Dayton Mall in the Southtowne Shopping Center. Southtown Cinemas I & II was the first area cinema to be wheel chair accessible.
Chakeres Theatres sold the Southtown Cinemas I & II in 1988 to National Amusements. National Amusements switched to a second run format and closed Southtown Cinemas I & II April 1st, 1990 with “Look Who’s Talking” and “War of the Roses”.

Jim Howard managed this theater in the late 70’s.
Holding a crowd for the next show then getting them in their seats took less than fifteen minutes when the ropes went down, thanks to the long hallway that stretched from the lobby to the parking lot way out front.
Some good memories. Still have the original “Magic” one sheet from 1978 and “Maximum Overdrive” from 1986.
I worked at Southtown from ‘82-84 under Jim Howard. Best boss I ever had! We showed ET for almost a year in theater 1, And we even had “Jesus” stop by one afternoon. good times a good memories.
Site is now home to a Target.
