Star Theater

I went to two theaters while growing up in Concord, N.H. – the Star Theater, which is now a video rental place renting the same Roy Rogers films I saw there as a kid. I was last in Concord in 1999 so it may have changed, but it was on a sidestreet. You can see the word “Star” on the threshold.

The Star Theater was opened November 24, 1915 and was right around the corner from the Concord Theater which is now used for community performances, but was still in use in 1972 while I was visiting there. You can still see the marquee and the poster frames on the building. The Star Theater closed in about 1950.

Does anyone know when the Star was built? Also, I have the theater on Pleasant Street; others say it is on Main. Is there a way I can confirm the address?

The Star Theatre was located on Pleasant Street in Concord, about ½ block up from Main Street. The Concord Theatre, where I worked from 1967 – 1994 when it closed, was at 18 ½ South Main Street in Concord.

The Theatre Historical Society archive has the MGM Theatre Report for the Star; it’s Card # 479. Address is Pleasant St. There is an exterior photo dated May 1941. Condition is Fair. The report says it’s over 15 years old, shows MGM films, and has 694 orchestra seats and 305 balcony seats, total 999. Competing theaters are the Concord Th., and the Capitol. 1940 population was 27,100.

The Star Theatre opened on November 24, 1915 having been built “at a cost of nearly $ 50,000…..” They called themselves in their ad, “The Photo Playhouse De-Luxe of New Hampshire”.
