Hi-Way Theater, Marion, Indiana

One of two drive-in theaters in Marion during the height of drive-in popularity. Operated from the mid-1950’s until it’s closure in the mid-1980’s. Stood vacant until being razed in 1990 for constuction of a Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse.

Wow! This is really a blast from the past. I have such fond childhood memories of the Hi-Way Drive in theater. Although I recall it looking much different from the above picture. I recall a rainbow of colors lighting up the outside portion of backside of the screen along with some neon lights upon entering. I’ve looked for photos but did not locate any. Many of my thoughts are often of my mother, Wanda Jo Smithley and her sister Norma Elaine (Smithley; McKinley) Williams, took myself my sisters (Kim, Monica and Michelle) along with my cousins (Missy, Cherie and Shawn McKinley) to the movies. If our moms were really broke some of us kids would hide in the trunk of the car to avoid admission costs. Additionally, my mother would pop brown paper bags of popcorn to snack on and to save money. Though the drive in closed in 1980, I was only ten years old, I have years of memories. Some of those memories were of us kids playing at the playing countless hours at the play ground just under the enormous screen, running to the concession stand, all the laughs and frights from the movies but most important of all the time spent with my family. I would love to have one more night. Thank you for the years of memories mom and Hi-Way drive in theater!
