Roy Theatre ... Munday Texas ... 2014

This shabby little theater seems to have been abandoned. A very plain building. There’s a scar where an awning or marquee was removed, and the name is painted on the front in large letters.

Munday theater owner dies on a Wednesday. From the Abilene Reporter-News on September 11, 1958:

MUNDAY (INS) – P.V. Williams, well-known Munday theater owner and Gulf distributor here, died of a liver ailment Wednesday about 3 p.m. in Bethania Hospital, Wichita Falls. He was 65. Mr. Williams, a longtime resident, had been in the hospital several weeks.

A former city councilman, he owned three Munday theatersâ€"the Roxy, the Roy, and the Sunset drive-in â€" and was consignee for Gulf petroleum products including a butane dealership here. Survivors include his wife, and five children, two boys and three girls. He belonged to the Methodist Church here. The body was taken to McCauley Funeral Home, Munday, where arrangements are pending.

An item in the January 10, 1948, Boxoffice says that P.V. Williams had recently opened a second theater at Munday, the Roy. “He rigged up some equipment from Herber Bros. and got the house going for roving agricultural workers who come from the southwest and Mexico” the item said. Williams told Boxoffice that the Roy did well when showing Mexican pictures.

A November, 1949, Boxoffice item said that the Roy had reopened for the winter, so it was apparently a seasonal theater.

Williams opened the Roxy in 1928, and there was a brief article with photo in the September 15 issue of Motion Picture Times that year. The Roxy had 490 seats.

A July 16, 1949, Boxoffice article about Williams said that he had opened his first theater in Munday in 1913. No name was given for that house.

There are a couple of small photos of the Roy Theatre on this web page. The building doesn’t look especially rustic to me. It’s a rather typical small town commercial building, though it’s been gussied up with three painted windows to make it look like it has a second floor.

Tinseltoes: The Roxy was an older theater operated by the owner of the Roy. It hasn’t been listed at Cinema Treasures yet. The Roxy was demolished in 1965.

The photo of the Roy Theatre that Chuck linked to in the first comment is gone, but I found another one partway down this web page.
