Empire Theatre, Leicester Square

Showing photograph dated June 1902 when it was a music hall. The façade is highly decorated for the Coronation of Edward VII which was to be held on Thursday 26th June 1902 however, the Coronation was delayed by the King’s operation for appendicitis until Saturday 9th August. This delay must have been expensive for the Empire which was completely covered by foliage and flowers which had to be maintained watered and replaced during the forty four days, after which it was found that some of the plants had grown roots through their containers on the canopy and into the lead beneath. If you enlarge the above picture hundreds of light bulbs shone out at night from the pediment, vertical columns, central arch and down to the swagged lighting around the entrance canopy. Also viewed amongst the ever growing demanding plants are the two gardeners, standing to the left on the canopy. Possibly the agricultural show attracted more customers for the Empire.
