The Crest Theatre was constructed in 1950 and was built for Erwin and Bertha Sklar (Erwin Sklar later became Mayor of Oceanside). It opened around March 1951 and remained in the ownership of the Sklar’s until the mid-1960’s when it was sold to a property developer who purchased other theatres in Oceanside.
The Crest Theatre was operated by Pussycat Theatres, and continued as a movie theatre into at least the late-1980’s. It is now used as a church (Grace Church) but movies can still be screened, as in summer of 2004, when Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” had screenings.
