Documentary Seeks Vic Moviegoers For Memories & Momentos

DEVONPORT, AUCKLAND — Hello, I am an indie movie maker producing a video history of The Vic on Auckland’s North Shore.

It was started by a chap named Benwell in 1912. He was an American who returned to California and struck oil (literally). He never returned and the cinema and been running ever since – it is the southern hemisphere’s oldest operational cinema.

If you have any old photos, momentos or anecdotes you would like to share, then please get in touch. Production will end on October 31 2005 and the video will be released in December 2005.

    Toronto Theatres

Does anyone have any historical information on the Pylon, Weston & San Carlino Theatres in Tornoto? The Pylon, at least, is now a movie theatre.

    Regards.

    Former Theatre On 14th Street?

Does anyone know if the building located to the direct left of Foot Locker, on the south side of 14th Street in Manhattan, just east of 6th Avenue, was formerly a theatre? The exterior of the building certainly gives that appearance… (The ground floor level has long been occupied by an electronics store.)

The Sound Of Music – 40 Years!

I saw this movie when I was young in the Downtown Mann in Minneapolis, and later in the St. Louis Park Cinerama. Both were widescreen presentations: the Mann was an old fashioned ‘Roadshow’ presentation, but I believe the Park showing was in original Todd-AO or SuperPanavision.

Does anyone know of a planned 70mm showing scheduled anywhere for the 40th year anniversary of this classic in a theater up to the task?

    Where Was This Theatre?

Yesterday’s New York Times has an article about The Sound of Music, accompanied by this photo:

    The caption reads:
The sound of protest: college students in Minnesota in 1966 saying “enough” to “The Sound of Music.” The photo is credited to 20th Century Fox.

Anyone recognize this theatre? Where was it? Is it still standing and operating?

    Continuous Movies

NASHVILLE, TN — How many of us remember running continuous movies from 11:00 am till 12:00 midnight?

With good old carbon arc lamps, and 20 minute changeovers, the booth being hotter than the hinges to the gates of hell. When you could not open a window for fear the air would crack the reflector in the lamp. The daily hike up and down the steps to get to the booth.

We now call them the good old days, and we are right… they were.
