Cocteau cinema reopens thanks to Game of Thrones scribe
SANTA FE, NM — The Jean Cocteau Cinema reopened the other week after it was announced in April that George R.R. Martin (“Game of Thrones”) had purchased it. Right now it looks like they will focus on classics and art-house fare. It had been closed since 2006.

New luxury theater opens in Glendale
GLENDALE, CA — Delays due retrofitting made the wait longer than expected but Glendale’s luxury Five Star Cinema is now open in the former Mann Exchange 10. Like local competitor iPic, Five Star aims to bring patrons in with in-theater dining and plush seats with a call button. Their tickets are about $10 less expensive though.

Alamo Drafthouse will reopen the former Rave CityPlace 14 in Kalamazoo in October
KALAMAZOO, MI— Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas is renovating the former Rave CityPlace 14 and has announced that they will reopen the renovated cinema in October 2013. They already have an official web site for the new Alamo Drafthouse Kalamazoo at with Facebook and Twitter links. It will be Alamo Drafthouse’s first location in Michigan.

Bijou by the Bay project to be completed under budget and will open by July 29
TRAVERSE CITY, MI — The new Bijou by the Bay in the former Con Foster Museum will open by July 29 but just barely. Traverse City Film Festival founder Michael Moore stated that the construction budget for the theater came in at $800,000 which is well under the $1.5 million previously quoted by festival director Deb Lake.

Bijou Metro Cinema opens Downtown
EUGENE, OR — The new art-house cinema mentioned last summer is a reality with the opening of the Bijou Metro Cinema. Food and local beer are part of the offerings in their 4 auditoriums ranging in capacity from 17 to 36 people.

Landmark’s Bethesda Row is back
BETHESDA, MD — The arthouse gem, the Bethesda Row Cinema reopened last week after a month-long renovation. Plush leather seats and a new bar are just some of the highlights.

Another life for the Louxor
PARIS, FRANCE — While many cinemas are closing, a special one closed for 25 years has just reopened. The Louxor is back and better than ever. They plan to focus on showing films from developing nations to cater to the local cinephile audience.

US 23 DI Reopens for the season with upgrades this year
FLINT, MI — The US 23 Drive-in Theatre reopened for the season on April 19 with improvements planned for this year. The drive in will have digital projectors for all three screens installed by June which cost $90,000 each which necessitates an increase in admission prices this year to defray the cost of the new projectors by $1.00 so adult admission is $8.00 and child admission is $6.00 for a double feature. Among the films to be shown this year will be “Fast and Furious VI,” “Man of Steel,” “Despicable Me 2,” “Grown Ups 2,” and “Iron-Man 3.”

Plainview couple to reopen Port Washington theatre
PORT WASHINGTON, NY — The renovated Soundview Cinemas hinted at almost a year ago is closer to a reality. A local couple is rushing to finalize the upgrades and reopen the theatre by the end of April, after recently signing a lease.

Hyde Park’s new (old) theater reopens
CHICAGO, IL — After ten years of darkness, the Harper Theater has reopened. The newly-renovated theatre will also house a cafe and coffee shop.
