City to theaters: If you build it…
SANTA CLARITA, CA — Frustrated by few independent film choices in their nearby cinemas, Santa Clarita residents have to drive to other areas of Los Angeles County for a wider selection. The dissolution of numerous redevelopment agencies hasn’t made it any easier. They’re hoping enough interest will either lure an arthouse chain to the area or make the local chains use a few screens for independent films.

Ioka’s supporters rally around theater
EXETER, NH — There was a rally last the other weekend to save the Ioka Theater. The theatre’s new owner is trying to raise awareness by encouraging people to become members of the theatre company. Through the membership drive, they hope to raise money for upgrades and ultimately reopen it for film.

Group hopes to revive theater in Chincoteague
CHINCOTEAGUE ISLAND, VA — The newly formed Chincoteague Island Arts Organization has rallied locals to raise $100,000 to purchase the Island Roxy Theatre. They plan to use it a performing arts and educational center.

A.C.T. saves Strand
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Help is coming for the Market Street staple, the Strand now that the American Conservatory Theatre has purchased it. They plan on cutting the seating down to 300 so it can be an intimate venue for more experimental theatre.

New chapter for Skokie Theatre
SKOKIE, IL — After closing two months ago, the future wasn’t too bright for the Skokie Theatre. Now, the owners of the nearby Gorilla Tango Theatre have stepped up to buy it and bring regular entertainment back. They plan on showcasing live performances and occasional films as well.

Hamburg Strand owner not giving up
HAMBURG, PA — Even after a significant drop in ticket prices, the Strand is still struggling. The owner hopes to sell it to someone or some group that can support it because he cannot afford the marketing and broader range of entertainment he feels it requires to survive.

MOUNT AIRY, NC — An old-time music festival was the impetus for improvements at the Earle Theatre. The theatre has had its ups and downs over the years but dedicated locals have led to its slow revival.

Thieves strike Palace Theatre
LOCKPORT, NY — The Palace Theatre was the unfortunate victim of a burglary a couple weeks ago. Thieves took a few air-conditioning units that they just raised money for a few years back.

Old movie theaters find new life
USA Today is reporting that an increasing number of revamped classic theaters are appealing to today’s moviegoers. They feature a number of classic theaters still standing like the Tampa, Fowler, Hollywood Theatre, Colonial, the Boyd and the Joy.

New Mission Theater possibly to become five-screen Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — New life could be coming to the long dormant New Mission Theater. There is talk that the theatre could be seismically retrofitted and divided up into five screens for a new Alamo Drafthouse.
