The North Rises Again
DANVILLE, VA — Travis Hackworth writes in with this update on the North Theater:September 9, 2003 will forever be remembered in Danville, Virginia as a day long overdue.
The old North Theater located in the north side of Danville, formerly the Neapolis, was bought and is currently going under a $2 million restoration.
The 56 year old theater, which seats 600, will become the city’s premier cultural center, and stage productions will begin as early as November 2004. The theater’s lobby still features historic movie posters, including “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and “ The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.” The theater, when completely renovated will feature a $1 million Steinway Concert grand piano.
Those who contribute $50,000 or more will have a plaque placed in the theater. $1000 will buy a vintage movie chair named in the donor’s honor. After the initial $2 million dollars is raised, the owners hope to raise an additional $2 million for an endowment fund.
