Farewell Ceremony For Yeadon Theater
YEADON, PA — George Quirk writes in with news from the Delaware County Times:Residents and borough officials will gather to say farewell to the Yeadon Theater on Church Lane Wednesday August 27, 2003, at 6:30PM.
Demolition of the half-century-old building with the art deco facade is scheduled to begin early next week. The borough purchased the 12,000 square-foot structure and three-quarter-acre lot in 2001.
Yeadon’s Community Development Corp. is planning to replace the old theater with a multi-purpose building that will house a new library, meeting rooms, and complimentary retail sites.
Engineering studies determined it would be more cost-effective to demolish and rebuild rather than renovate the existing structure.
Although the old theater was not considered an historic or architectural treasure, it held sentimental value for many long time residents.
“The theater has meant a lot to this community. We don’t want to just see it demolished without a proper good-bye,” Council President Jacquelynn Puriefoy-Brinkley said.

Latest News From The Sameric
PHILADELPHIA, PA — Howard Haas, Chairman of Save the Boyd, writes:Volunteers from the Friends of the Boyd visited the Sameric Boyd theater on August 7, 2003, and discovered, underneath two levels of recent upholstery, the original 1928 upholstery on one of the chairs in the balcony!
A spectacular find, the original upholstery is in an Art Deco pattern which was applauded in a 1929 trade magazine article about the Boyd. Photos of the 1928 chair and upholstery, along with other new photos (including art deco metalwork and glass), can be found on our website.
The Friends of the Boyd is the nonprofit organization working to save and restore Philadelphia’s last movie palace.
