Need transportation help ASAP for salvaged historic screen

TUCSON, AZ — A non-profit organization has been able to save a historic screen from the closed DeAnza Drive-In (formerly Cactus Drive-In started in 1951) and needs transportation help to relocate the dismantled screen to a storage location. They are working with city government officials and supportive businesses and a neighborhood organization to secure a new location for a walk-in, bike-in, drive-in location in Tucson. We hope to enable future generations of Tucsonans to have the “drive-in” experience. The screen has been dismantled and we are in need of a transporter to haul the pieces to a storage location until we get the new property secured and prepared. This is a recent news story about the situation.

  • City Council approves financing for IMAX screen at Wichita area theater

WICHITA, KS — The approval of the issuance of millions of dollars in industrial revenue bonds by the Wichita City Council clears the way for construction of what is claimed to be the world’s largest digital IMAX screen at the 21st Street Warren Theatre.

The project would add a 600-seat IMAX theater to Warren’s movie complex near 21st Street North and Tyler Road. Warren is describing the theater as the largest commercial digital IMAX in the world.

The proposal would provide a 100 percent property tax abatement on the property. Warren instead would make payments in lieu of taxes equal to the property’s 2009 taxes, plus a 2.3 percent annual escalator.

The full story is in the Wichita Business Journal.

Christie brings entertainment to Haitain earthquake victims

CYPRESS, CA — Running until April 11th, the Cinepolis Foundation’s social outreach program entitled “Let’s all go to Cinepolis Haiti” will screen 11 movies on donated Christie digital cinema projectors reaching more than 70,000 people devastated by the February 12th earthquake.

“Let’s all go to Cinepolis Haiti” is a joint effort between the Cinepolis Foundation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, as well as the support of the Ministry of Culture of Haiti, FilmAid International, DOR Internacional and Christie Digital Systems USA, Inc. This partnership aids in the reconstruction of Haiti by promoting positive messages and by bringing a moment of relaxation and joy as the country continues its recovery.

Lorena Guillen-Laris, Executive Director of Cinepolis Foundation notes: ‘Let’s all go to Cinepolis Haiti’ seeks to provide glimmers of hope and moments of family life that contribute to the emotional state of our Haitian brothers and sisters. We want to laugh, dream and be inspired by positive messages. The short films will encourage them to be strong and move forward.

  • Moxie Theater in Springfield for sale

SPRINGFELD, MO — The funky little Moxie Cinema is for sale. The owner is also apparently considering the possibility of going non-profit.

Last fall, Dan and Nicole Chilton quietly put independent movie house The Moxie Cinema on the market, listing the theater with business brokerage firm The Kingsley Group. Nicole Chilton said it’s time for a change in focus: Dan Chilton has been concentrating on his full-time work as a Web site designer and programmer for AOL, and the couple welcomed a baby into their family four months ago.

The movie house is listed on Kingsley’s Web site for $150,000, and the sale price includes the business, equipment, branding and Web site, Nicole Chilton said. The theater’s 4,300-square foot location at Wilhoit Plaza at Jefferson Avenue and Pershing Street is leased from The Matt Miller Co. and has about 18 months left on the lease with an option to renew.
