  • Beacon Theatre reopens after $16 million restoration

NEW YORK, NY — New York’s Beacon Theatre reopened after a $16 million restoration.

It had long been thought that a sparkly, 10-inch-wide, cut-crystal ball — the principal ornament at the tip of the 900-pound chandelier in the rotunda of the former movie palace — was attached with a sturdy bronze fixture.

But when the chandelier was lowered to be cleaned, rewired and repaired, the real support for the crystal orb was revealed: a vintage 6-inch-tall coffee tin.

    Landmark events on Cinema Treasures

It seems like only yesterday (well it was September 10, 2007 actually) that we boasted the 1,000th United Kingdom cinema/movie theater to be entered on the Cinema Treasures database. We can now reveal that this figure has been doubled, thanks to our volunteer Theater Editor Ken Roe (who is based in London, UK) and the many dedicated contributors throughout the world who have made such a marked input on this section of the site. Congratulations to all concerned in making this Landmark event….2,000+ and counting……..

As if this wasn’t enough……Cinema Treasures has also attained another Landmark event……

The United Kingdom section of Cinema Treasures can now boast to be the first major country on our ‘Locations’ that has listings for ALL currently operating cinemas represented. Again Ken Roe and many other mainly UK contributors have achieved the mammoth task of building a database list of every ‘open’ cinema in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Our pages range from the latest city multiplex and megaplex to the restored ‘classic’ cinema buildings, and also include the art centres and public halls which keep the magic of cinema alive in the small towns and villages. Again congratulations are in order for this outstanding achievement.

  • Oakland revitalized with reopening of Fox

OAKLAND, CA — The newly reopened Fox Theatre is having a profound impact on the neighboring community.

Even with a down economy, there are signs that the theater could pump life back into the neighborhood. Months before it opened, the theater had sold out nearly all of its performances through April. Acts include B.B. King, Cake and the Moody Blues.

“We’re looking very seriously at moving into Uptown; we do have some reservations because of crime,” said Kamil Kolacek, a data analyst who works at Kaiser Permanente downtown and who wants to cut his 90-minute commute from San Jose.
