Historic Ridgewood Theatre may be landmarked & reopen, but still needs your help

RIDGEWOOD, NY — Thomas Lamb’s 1916 [url/theater/4021/] Ridgewood Theatre[/url] (55-27 Myrtle Ave) shuttered in March 2008, and was deemed the longest continuously operating first-run neighborhood theater in NY, and potentially throughout the U.S. Nearly one year later, this is how a gem fared:

    1. The NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission might calendar the facade for a public hearing in the near future to determine its eligibility as a NYC Landmark, but no word is official yet. Please sign an online petition & post a comment, to designate the facade an Individual Landmark, and the lobby an Interior Landmark (by law, only possible once the theater reopens). Please share this link with your colleagues. Your help is extremely significant, only takes moments, and can go a long way:

  • Seeking endangered theater to transport & spare from demolition

After brokering a deal to spare NYC’s historic Cheyenne Diner from oblivion via transport to AL (in coming weeks), I am now seeking a historic theater to spare from demolition. The joint project entails transporting a theater, that is preferably in imminent endangerment of demolition.

I have historic preservation investors lined up, who would be interested in transporting the historic facade and any interior architectural attributes, if not the entire interior.

To recommend theaters that fit the above criteria, please Michael Perlman.

    Thank you!

    Rendering of Philadelphia’s Boyd Theatre

Friends of the Boyd are pleased to share with you our link to this
wonderful rendering of what Philadelphia’s historic Boyd Theatre’s
Chestnut Street frontage would look like restored to its original 1928 exterior (albeit without the vertical sign).

    Friends of the Boyd link

Thanks to architects Martinez and Johnson of Washington D.C. for the incredible work they have done on this project over the years, originally for Clear Channel and currently for Philadelphia developer Hal Wheeler. As to the vertical sign, Gary Martinez has stated they will design so the vertical could later be installed. Because the 1928 photos are black and white, the proposed colors for the Boyd frontage were derived from original Art Deco colors discovered at the Boyd Theatre.
