  • Nathan Gordon’s Olympia circuit

My great-great-uncle was Nathan Gordon, owner of a string of Boston theaters back in the early 1900’s, as highlighted in a few references on your wonderful site.

In other references to my uncle, he supposedly owned a total of 75 theaters in the NE area (MA, CT, etc.) of the country and I am trying to find a listing of as many of them as possible. Please let me know if there is any way of obtaining this information or if you know of any other locations of his theaters outside of Boston.

Thank you for a great site. It is definitely helping me in my family tree research!

Terrace Theater sold to Cinema Treasures member

CHARLESTON, SC — The Terrace Theater at 1956 Maybank Highway was sold last week to Michael Furlinger. Mr. Furlinger started in the movie business in 1982 as an usher for Century Theaters and later went on to become district manager for Cineplex Odeon. For the past 17 years he has owned a chain of gourmet food shops called The Sweet Gourmet.

The Terrace Theater is Charleston’s premier art house and has been in operation for 10 years.

  • Good News about the Community Theater!

FAIRFIELD, CT — Just checked, and the Community Theater is back in business quite soon after their close call! Thankfully, hard-working people have done what they could so that the Community did not go the way of the Rialto, Lyric, Globe, Poli, Majestic, Strand, Warner, Rivoli, Beverly, and many, many others who have become just faded memories!

Thankfully, there are people that care that have banded together to continue to preserve an area landmark!

    Thanks, mom

Are you kidding me? So I was reading this New York Times article about Disney for the most part banning cigarette smoking in their films. It’ll be completely banished from their family films and discouraged from their others.

Disney’s action comes amid increasing pressure from advocacy groups and regulators for media companies to purge movies of cigarettes. In May, the Motion Picture Association of America announced that portrayals of smoking would be considered alongside sex and violence in assessing the suitability of movies for young viewers. Films that appear to glamorize smoking will risk a more restrictive rating.

Mr. Iger said in a letter to Representative Edward J. Markey, Democrat of Massachusetts, dated July 25 that Disney would also “discourage depictions of cigarette smoking” in pictures released by its Touchstone and Miramax units. Last month, Mr. Markey, chairman of the subcommittee on telecommunications, held hearings on the effects of movie images on children.

Now, let me get this straight. I’m not about to advocate cigarette smoking in any way, much less in a medium that touches millions. My problem is with the idea that this is being addressed in this manner.

  • Classic Movies in Theaters?

    Hello!

I’m working in a Odeon Theater in Quebec City, Canada, and my boss told us we have to get noticed by the big managers in Toronto or else they’ll close us in two years because we are a small non-upgraded-to-cineplex with regular clientele.

We had the idea of presenting old movies (1984, Clockwork Orange, Casablanca, The Blob (first one), Wayne’s World, Hitchcock’s movies, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, to name only the ones on top of my head) two or three time a week, after the usual movies.

The boss thinks it’s a good idea. We just can’t find a site about a theater that’s doing that (screening old movies), to get more information. What’s more, we can’t find a way to know which (and how many) movies are still available in 35 mm reels. We don’t want to write to the studios just yet as we don’t even have Toronto’s approval, but we would like to know if it’s doable.
