  • Hornbeck Theatre celebrates 60th birthday

SHAWNEE, OK — A Downtown Shawnee, OK. landmark turns 60 on July 10th as the Hornbeck Theatre celebrates six decades entertaining Shawnee moviegoers.

Built in 1947, the historic theatre was opened by former Shawnee mayor Adam Hornbeck, in partnership with Griffith Theatres, Inc. of Oklahoma City. Designed by Dallas architect, Jack Corgan, the spacious theatre originally seated over 1100 with its main floor and large balcony.

In the early 1950’s Griffith Theatres became Video Independent Theatres and in 1954 Hornbeck sold his interest in the theatre to Johnny H. Jones and sister Ruby Jones. The Jones Family has operated the theatre ever since, now in a joint venture with national cinema chain, Carmike Cinemas, which succeeded Video. That spacious balcony was remodeled in 1972 into a separate theatre, called the Penthouse.

  • Remembering the Forty-One Drive-In

CHATTANOOGA, TN — An article goes into detail about the history of the Forty-One Drive-In.

One ‘ozoner,’ the Forty-one Drive-in Theater, had a different sort of last picture show. If you stand on Fincher Avenue off Ringgold Road, and look towards the East Ridge interchange of Interstate 75, you will be looking at the old theater property. The Forty-one Drive-in’s rise and fall were both due to the automobile.

The parking lot of the Forty-one could hold up to 600 cars. That’s a lot of potential popcorn profits, but it was a smaller venue than the nearby Skyway, which could park at least 1,040 automobiles. The Forty-one Drive-in’s location was conveniently located to the growing suburbs of East Ridge and Brainerd. All of the traffic between Nashville and Atlanta traveled along Ringgold Road, so tourists might also be numbered among the customers.

    Fight for Park Theatre

LAFAYETTE, CA — Why can’t the people of Lafayette, California take an interest in the Park Theatre. It closed over a year ago and has been bought by someone who won’t let it return as a theatre.

I have written a story about it. One page. No one will publish it. It also contains a photo I took of the theatre. I tried the San Francisco Chronicle and the Contra Costa Times but with no luck.

I love this little one screen theatre and now it’s gone. The Cerrito Theatre was saved, the Lark in Larkspur, CA is being saved, but what about the Park Theatre?

  • Wanted: Photos/digital images of theatre fronts dressed up for a film

I am a huge fan of the vintage movie going experience. I am looking for photos or digital images of theatre fronts which have been decorated for a particular movie. I am also looking for vintage images showing lobby cards displayed. I am always trying to explain to other collectors how they were used in the past but a picture is worth a thousand words.

    Any help is appreciated.

  • Industry trade magazines needed for research project

We are trying to locate copies of any industry trade magazines (Boxoffice, Motion Picture Herald, Showman’s Trade Review, Hollywood Reporter, Exhibitor, Variety, etc) from the following weeks:

    December 19, 1953
    March 20, 1954

We are documenting information related to 3-D motion pictures from this period, and need issues from those weeks in order to complete our research. Any help in finding them would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Cinema Treasure @ Burleson Commons

BURLESON, TX — Ground has just been broken on this theater and I would like to get more info on what it will offer. The info boasts of including a Jazz Bar and an amphitheater but are they considering any screens equipped with REAR or OPEN CAPTION for the hearing impaired?

The AMC Parks has one and only one with rear caption. Grapevine Mills has one and that’s all that I know of and Grapevine is quite a drive. There are many people that enjoy the real theater experience, popcorn dripping w/butter and gum on your shoes, but they are left waiting for the DVD and watching at home with ORVILLE! I would like someone to look into this since the forms are not set, this would still be a chance to make a difference for the community! Thanks for listening!

    National Westwood in danger…again

LOS ANGELES, CA — An announcement was made during a screening of the Los Angeles Film Festival that the National Westwood Theatre is slated for demolition in six months to make way for a Banana Republic.

A petition was started by CT Members to save this treasure. Please sign it and let your voice be heard so we can save this landmark from a nearly forgotten era of movie palaces.
