  • Star-Vu Drive-In Opens May 18

COSTA MESA, CA – Star-Vu-Drive-In, the new drive-in movie theater debuting with an inflatable screen at the Orange County Fairgrounds, will open Friday, May 18 with two showings of SHREK 3, marking the first time in a decade a movie has been shown at an Orange County drive-in. Gates will open at 7 p.m. Showtimes are at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

The Star-Vu Drive-In is the brainchild of four principals, three of them from Orange County: Fred Armendariz, Jeffrey Teller and Mary Jean Duran. The fourth is Bob Deutsch of Rockville, Maryland and owner of Outdoor Movies, the supplier of the screen and state-of-the-art projection system.

Along with the 65' x 33' inflatable screen, an airscreen Premiere, the drive-in will include food concessions in the Westside Grill, a facility also used during the weekend swapmeet at the fairgrounds, and an adjacent Star-Vu Snack Shack, a kids play area with inflatable attractions, permanent restrooms and accommodation for 300 cars.

    Capitol cameo update

FLINT, MI — The Capitol Theatre marquee is now fully functioning and now every light bulb lights and moves—even the light bulbs under the marquee. The message on the marquee reads “MEGA BOWL ON CLOSED-CIRCUIT TV”. The Mega Bowl is the championship game in the film “Semi-Pro“ about an American Basketball Association basketball team called the Flint Michigan Tropics.

The theater entrance and rest of the theater building are also getting spruced up. The storefronts are getting vintage signs installed. Many of the signs are borrowed from Bob Perani’s collection from his Dort Mall. The film is scheduled to be released on February 29, 2008.

A news report (including video) from WJRT reports that the filming of scenes for “Semi-Pro” will take place at the Capitol Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday, May 2 and 3. Because the Capitol Theatre building is across Harrison Street from the Mass Transportation Authority transporation center, bus boarding and transfer locations will be moved to alternate locations for the duration of the film shoot.

  • Connecticut Law offers filmmakers 30 percent tax credit

In July, Connecticut passed a law that offers filmmakers a 30 percent tax credit for productions costing $50,000 or more – cited as the most generous for filmmakers in the United States. This has worked as we’ve seen 5 movies being filmed in Southwestern Connecticut since then, with more slated for the coming months.

New portions of the initiative would extend eligibility to 50 percent of a production’s out-of-state expenses and eliminate limits on talent fees for extras and actors with small roles. Pornography would not qualify.

London England 1941 - my memories of the projection room during the war.

    QUEUING ALL PARTS

(A look back at the wartime cinema)

    by

    BOB NARDUZZO

    INTRODUCTION

The following is dedicated to all the cinema projectionists, who during World War Two, helped to maintain morale of the British people, sometimes under difficult conditions.

Ageing equipment, together with lack of spare parts, shortage of staff, very strict working procedures and not to mention, enemy action, made life sometimes very difficult.

Without this relatively small band of back room boys, and considering the very limited alternative entertainments that were available at the time, no television, radio programmes off the air before and during air raids, Hollywood’s “Dream Factory” would not have been available to the great British public.

    Capitol marquee makes cameo

FLINT, MI — The long neglected 1940’s vintage marquee of the Capitol Theatre, built in 1927 and designed by John Eberson, is getting a $20,000 makeover for a movie cameo in the film “Semi-Pro “. A crew from the local firm Signs by Crannie is replacing lights and wiring as well as installing a new blinking mechanism.

While the marquee and blade sign received new neon in 2004/2005, no additional work was done on the marquee until now. The blade sign got a new paint job in the 2004/2005 makeover. According to Troy Farah, whose family owns the theater building, the marquee hadn’t fully functioned since the early 1980’s at the latest.
