    Culver City memories

    Just found this site today.

I worked at the Palms Theater in Los Angeles in 1975-79, and then 1982-85.

Also worked at the Culver from 1975-79.

Didn’t work for Stone or Allen, but they still owned the property, and one of them still lived across the street (above the bike shop?) and came in occasionally for a free movie.

After the last showing, we used to play poker in the lobby. Last hand was at sunrise, big winner bought breakfast for everyone. Big stakes too; nickel, dime, quarter. If you bet a quarter and were raised three times, that you meant you were in for at least a buck. Since I made $2/hour, that was big.

Please share your knowledge of the theatre’s history.

    I will post photos shortly.

If anyone has any fond memories of this classical theatre please post them or to share your memories or to inquire about the Olympic’s status and offerings.

Port Theatre on Gulf Coast of Florida

PORT ST. JOE, FL — The owners of the Port Theatre are dedicated to lowering the asking price of this theatre regularly until it sells. They no longer live in the manager’s apartment above the theatre, and can no longer hold auctions in the building to make the payments.

There have been two offers on the building since it has been on the market for sale. The owners had to clear a legal matter with a neighboring property before selling and now all is cleared up. This beautiful art deco theatre building is located in a town that has so much potential. The building could be made into a number of innovative purposes, or could be restored back to full theatre use if the new owner desired.

  • Movie theatre expanding to live shows

Does anyone here have any suggestions as to what equipment would be required to allow a quonset hut theatre to put on live shows, bands and other events besides just films? Is there a general ‘rule’ as to what lighting, sound, electrical equipiment, etc would be needed to allow these sort of events use your venue?

There is a stage in place and some crappy lights here and there so an operational makeover is needed! Thanks.

    Lebowsky demolition update

OWOSSO, MI — For the first time since the Lebowsky Center was gutted by fire during the late night hours of February 13, Park Street alongside the now partially demolished theater has fully reopened.

The big Caterpillar machine is gone and the street has been cleaned up. So it looks as if most of the demolition is finished. I’ve contacted Sascon Inc., the project’s contractor, and the person in charge of the Lebowsky project named Ted was unavailable. I’ll try to keep in touch with him about the status of the project.

As I may have mentioned previously, the Owosso Community Players will make a final decision about the future of the Lebowsky Center by the end of summer.

  • Question about film rentals

I have built a 35 seat cinema but I dont know how to go about getting current movies to show. Also being such a small cinema, would it be worth my while? Do the movie distributors base their price on the amount of seats in the cinema?

Any help would be most appreciated.

  • Pemberton Cinema 4 update 2

VICKSBURG, MS — Now, six months have lapsed and Vicksburg still doesn’t have a cinema. I heard that Mayor Leyens was asked about the Pemberton again. Now his big mistake was this: he said in an interview the day the cinema operator opted that by summer this port would have cinema and the CBL rep claimed that she’s searching for one. I got smart when I was out at the near dead mall and I ask around. The response? No new operator.

But the mayor got nervous about the question. He stated that he’s going to Las Vegas Nevada next week to confront CBL Associates directly on the issue. He admitted the cinema is in poor repair and needs work. But the locals I suspect want a brand new bigger cinema.

Garden Theatre premieres StarLite Movie Night series

WINTER GARDEN, FL – The streets of downtown Winter Garden were filled with over 1500 excited moviegoers Saturday evening as the Garden Theatre premiered The Starlite Movie Night series under the marquee. The two-story movie screen showcasing the Ben Stiller flick, “Night at the Museum”, provided free family fun as a thank you to the community for its continued support of the theatre while building excitement around the re-opening scheduled for January 2008.

This event, sponsored by Seasons 52 and Castle & Cooke, marked the first cinematic experience in the historic downtown area in over forty years. Families and friends, gathered on blankets and lawn chairs to create a drive-in ambiance, enjoyed the Lakeview Middle School jazz band pre-show while favorite movie refreshments, including popcorn, candy, snocones, and cotton candy, were served.
