    State Theater Lives again

TRAVERSE CITY, MI — Michael Moore has announced that the Traverse City Film Festival has acquired the State Theatre. They have plans to keep the theatre open year-round and of course keep the film festival there.

Dear Traverse City Film Festival Volunteers,

I have some very good news for you. Yesterday at 10 a.m., I signed the papers that make the Traverse City Film Festival the new owner of the historic State Theatre in downtown Traverse City! That’s right — the film festival not only now has a permanent home, we are going to re-open the State Theatre as a year-round, state-of-the-art film theater showing the best of American independent, classic, and foreign cinema.

This resurrection of the State has been made possible through the generosity of Rotary Charities of Traverse City — until Tuesday, the owner of the building. They have “sold” it to us for a performance-based mortgage which states that the $600,000 “cost” of the theater is forgiven if we keep it open a certain number of days for at least five years. If we do, the mortgage is torn up and the theater is ours for free.

In order to bring the State back to life, it will take the active involvement of our area’s very large group of movie lovers — namely, you! Those of you who live in the Traverse City area know about the long history of a variety of groups trying to re-open the State. Each group attempted a major fundraising campaign to restore the theater. Sadly, their goals were not met, and the darkened theater changed hands a number of times.

  • Pacific’s Galleria 16 turning into an ArcLight Cinema

During this weekend’s showings of Pirates of the Caribbean, theatre officials announced that the five year old Sherman Oaks theatre would reopen as an ArcLight cinema in the winter of ‘07. Plans are to close the smaller auditoriums at the end of the summer, then close the entire complex in the fall while the remodeling is done.

According to the theatre manager, the prices will rise in accordance with the upgrade to an ArcLight, although it was hinted that they might still be a dollar or two less than the Hollywood flagship.

  • THE DIRTY DOZEN: USA re-release date was ????

Anybody know when it was reissued in the NYC area around 1968 or 1969 please? Channel 31, NYC ran it this weekend and it brings back some great childhood moviegoing memories.

    Thanks Much.

  • Washington Theater to get face lift & conversion to lofts

BELLEVILLE, IL — Plans are in motion to restore the front of the Washington Theater and at least convert some of it to lofts.

Hillesheim said she hopes to be able to make loft space in the taller part of the theater building known as the fly space, where scenery and other items could be raised out of the way of the stage.

Work on the facade is at a halt at the moment because Hillesheim has to apply for downtown facade improvement grants and plan out what is to be done and how to do it.

We’re moving to a new server!

I’m very excited to announce that Cinema Treasures is moving to a new home tomorrow.

    Why are we moving?
Well, as you know, our website has been quite sluggish for over a year, even as we worked very hard to upgrade and optimize our server. (It doesn’t help that our traffic doubled during the same time period.)

But, since our traffic is still growing every month, we’ve outgrown our current server, and it’s time to move Cinema Treasures to a more powerful (and expensive) server.

Will the site work during the move?
Probably not. Once we switch over, the old website will be disabled to prevent new comments or theater submissions from being lost.

    When will the site return?
It’s hard to say, but our best guess is within 24 hours. Possibly much shorter, but we won’t really know until it happens.

What time will the transfer begin?
    Thursday, at approximately 3pm Pacific.

We’ll do our best to ease the pain of migrating, but do expect some bumps on the road.

Given the complexity of the transfer, please be aware that you may not be able to access Cinema Treasures for up to 24 hours.

    Best,
    Patrick

    ….

UPDATE: Looks like we’re switched over! Everything seems to be working well, except email (this will probably take another day or two). Please post your comments/feedback below.
